Planning a Motorcycle Road trip?

Motorcycles have limitations, planning a road trip on a motorcycle requires a great deal of planning. Here are some tips for planning your next motorcycle road trip:

  • Pack wisely! Limited storage options mean you’ll need to take the necessities first and only include others items if you have room.
  • Always pack a safety and repair kit. If you don’t have room for this on your bike, you may want to add a back pack, or go through your inventory of packed gear to see what you can remove to make room for it.
  • Know the weather patterns and possibilities of your route. Chances are that your road trip won’t be all blue skies and sunshine. You’ll need to pack gear appropriate for weather changes and the different conditions you may be traveling through.
  • Know your stops ahead of time if possible. Whether you’re getting tired or need to break for weather, planning ahead of time can help prevent dangerous situations.
  • Inspect your bike before you ride. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation suggests using the T-CLOCS method of inspection – Tires, Controls, Lights, Oils and fluids, Chassis, and Stands.
  • Plan for flexibility. It may sound like an oxymoron, but planning for the unexpected and the different possibilities may mean the difference between an enjoyable trip and a nightmare. This means planning for weather conditions, bike repairs, long hours, and the potholes that can be expected to be unexpected.
  • Wear your safety gear. This means weather-appropriate attire for your conditions and a full-face helmet, gloves and protective pants and boots.
  • Take your time. Part of enjoying the ride means taking breaks when you need to eat, rest, use the restroom or even take in a few sights. Though you may have a final destination in mind, don’t ride to exhaustion – this only puts you and others on the road in danger.
  • Know your insurance info. No amount of planning can always have you covered, make sure you’re using a good motorcycle insurance company who will be there when you need it.
