Motorcycle Insurance Rates

Whether you’re not to the motorcycle scene or a seasoned veteran, knowing what makes or breaks your motorcycle insurance rates can help you make an informed decision on what bike to buy and what company to use to insure your new toy.

These factors almost always have an effect on your insurance rate:

1) The type of bike you own. A newer bike or one decked out with every kind ofupgrade or accessory will cost more to insure. Typically, the more basic your bike is the lower your insurance rate will be.

2) You. As with most vehicle insurance rates, companies look at you as a person and a driver to figure out your risk. Older drivers typically get lower insurances, but if you’re new to driving a motorcycle, you may not get the same rate as an older, seasoned biker. Your driving history will also have an effect – if you have a clean driving record, your rate will most likely cost less.

3) Where you live and work. Insurance companies look at where you live and work to help decide your insurance rate because it is most likely where you will spend the most time riding your bike. If you live in a high crime area or an area with heavy traffic and many accidents, your insurance may cost more. Additionally, where you work can effect your rate because of where your bike is parked during your workday. Certain jobs have higher risk factors because of the activity surrounding them. For example, if you park your bike at construction site or another high activity location, you may experience higher rates.

4) How often and how far your ride your motorcycle. Some bikers only hit the road when the weather is prime for a joy ride, while another may use his or her motorcycle as a primary means of transportation. The less you drive your bike, the less likely it is you’ll experience an accident. Weekend warriors may have lower insurance rates than full-time cyclists.

5) Experience and training. Some insurance companies give discounts to motorcyclists how have taken a professional motorcyclist course. Make sure to ask your insurance agent if this type of education can help cut our rate.
