How are RV Insurance Rates Determined? 12 Factors

How is your RV Insurance Rate determined? At Gilbert RV Insurance, we seek to provide the most affordable RV insurance coverage for you. To do this, we represent multiple RV insurance specialty companies. Checking rates from different companies is just one way we work to find the best rate for you. If you’re wondering how those rates are determined, take a look at the factors below to get a better idea.

1) Location
Certain geographical locations carry more risk than others. Areas with high crimes rates will be a cause of concern for an insurer. Where you park your RV when you’re not traveling often affects your rate. An experienced RV insurance agent will be able to tell you whether parking your RV in a different location can help you save more money.

2) Amount of Time on the Road
RV insurance policies differ for full-time RVers versus casual RV vacationers. If your RV or motorhome is your primary residence, you must have full-timers insurance to be covered. This is a policy that is more like a homeowner’s policy for RVers. For the casual RVer, a recreational policy will do.

3) Type of RV
A Class A RV often is rated higher due to the large windshield area in the front of the RV. However, a Class C has less windshield area to break and deserves a lower ranking when it coes to RV insurance rate. When buying an RV, motorhome, or camper of any kind, take into consideration the cost of the unit and the size of the windshield area. This will help determine the factors that affect your insurance rate.

4) Experience
For veteran and experienced RVers, your hours logged on the road could mean savings on your insurance rate. Ask your insurance agent about discounts for experienced RV drivers.

5) Age
Many insurance companies offer discounts for married couples and inidivuals between 40 and 65 years of age. When it comes to RVing, growing older certainly means growing bolder. Check with your agent on discounts available based on age.

6) Driving Record
While driving a car is certainly different from driving an RV, insurance companies look at your past driving record in both cars and RVs to get a grasp on your driving habits. If your record is clear or resolved, a discount may be on the books for you.

7) RV Association Memberships
Memberships don’t just get you discounted rates on overnight stays at parks and campgrounds. Being part of an RV Association may also gain you discounts on insurance rates. These discounts will vary by company. When speaking with an insurance agent, make sure to mention your membership to see if it can help reduce the rate you’ll pay for coverage.

8) Deductible Payments
A higher deductible often means a lower overall insurance rate. However, we never recommend raising the deductible just to get a lower rate. A policyholder should always choose a deductible that he or she is comfortable with. Losing sleep at night just to get a lower deductible is never a recommended course of action.

9) Claim History – CLUE Reports
Individuals who open insurance accounts and make claims shortly thereafter are seen as a higher risk. A CLUE report may be pulled to see your history with making insurance claims, and may impact your overall rate. Keeping claims justifiable and to a minimum will save you money.

10) Home Ownership
Often times, home ownership shows RV insurance companies that you are not a full-time RVer, which like we mentioned above, could mean major savings. Your insurance agent will be aware of any discounts stemming from home ownership so make sure to ask.

11) Marital Status
Insurance companies see marital status as a measure of stability. Married individuals are often more careful drivers, and the same is true of RVers.

12) Credit Score
Individuals with good credit may see a savings on their RV insurance policy. Insurance companies often view credit as a picture of your responsibility.  The more responsible you are with credit, the more likely you’ll be responsible with your RV and other possessions.
